Forest and Wood Communities Australia welcomes the decision of the Australian Federal Court – throwing out a case brought forward by extremist “environmental” group North East Forest Alliance (NEFA), in a welcome victory for timber communities all over New South Wales.
We are hopeful at Forest and Wood Communities Australia that the Minns Labor Government will continue to support the sustainable native timber sector and not give into the anti-rural pro-activist tendencies of their Victorian Labor cousins. The Victorian experience shows us the potential impacts that a mismanaged sector-wide shutdown can have as those confronted with an uncertain future seek potential opportunities elsewhere.
While this year has been a horror story for many involved in the Victorian industry and in our beloved timber communities – the fighting spirit remains – as does the desire to produce much needed timber products that our communities and country needs.
For a Premier that purports to represent a regional electorate (Bendigo East) and who is married to Yorick Piper – a former high ranking Victorian official in the CFMEU Forestry and Manufacturing division – there is absolutely no excuse for her ignorance on this issue – feigned or not.
Clarence Valley council have rejected a proposal to ban native timber harvesting in their region – with 95% of public submissions in favor of the sustainable sector.
Environmental extremists set to take family businesses to court – with communities to suffer reduced access to firewood and increased fire risk.
Throughout Victoria – illegal firewood collection as a result of the end of the sustainable native timber industry has taken hold in some of our most valued and rare ecological gems.
